From open-heart surgery and neurosurgery to a Chest Pain Center and behavioral health services, Freeman Health System – Springdale Medical Center provides a range of services. Additionally, after an accident or critical illness, some patients need intensive therapy before they can leave the hospital. That’s why we provide an acute-care inpatient rehabilitation unit.

In 2021, the Arkansas Institute for Performance Excellence awarded Freeman Health System the highest-level Governor’s Award for Performance Excellence. An award focused on continuous quality improvement and not presented every year, only 27 Arkansas organizations have received the highest-level award.

Springdale’s cardiac care history includes the first open-heart surgery performed in Northwest Arkansas. In 2011, the hospital became the first in Northwest Arkansas to achieve Chest Pain Center accreditation with PCI. That year, the area’s first procedure to implant an Impella heart pump was also performed there.

The hospital later purchased Arkansas’s first flat-panel catheterization lab for cardiovascular imaging. The technology provided sharper X-ray images and internal 3D images in seconds, reducing test times and radiation exposure compared with the earlier imaging approach.

In 2016, the interventional cardiology team became the first in Arkansas to implant an FDA-approved dissolving heart stent for a patient with coronary artery disease. Unlike permanent metal stents, the absorbable stent used a material designed to dissolve over about three years after supporting the artery during healing.

Springdale also participated in the National Cardiogenic Shock Initiative, joining other health systems studying ways to improve survival for patients with acute myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock. The single-arm, multicenter study evaluated standardized best practices, including use of a heart pump during percutaneous coronary intervention.

The hospital opened in 1952 as Springdale Memorial Hospital. Harvey Jones, who was instrumental in developing the city’s first hospital, served as its first board chairman and continued serving on the board for 47 years. He and his wife, Bernice, nurtured and financially supported the hospital’s expansion into the medical center.
