What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer occurs in the prostate gland in men and is one of the most common types of cancer. Symptoms of prostate cancer may include trouble urinating, blood in urine, weight loss, erectile dysfunction and more. Treatment options may vary from person to person and can include radiation therapy, cryotherapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, a prostatectomy or watchful waiting. While there is no clear cause for prostate cancer, some risk factors include age, race, family history and obesity.

Robotic urology care in Arkansas

Robotic-assisted surgery uses computer-assisted technology and instruments controlled by a surgeon. Arkansas hospitals offer different procedures, so your care team will help identify the appropriate treatment and location.

Bentonville Medical Center offers robotic, heat-free waterjet therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. Ultrasound imaging and a camera allow the surgeon to map the prostate and tailor treatment to the patient’s anatomy. A robotically controlled waterjet removes the mapped tissue through the urethra, without external incisions.

Treatment is performed under anesthesia in the hospital and generally involves an overnight stay. A surgeon may use a small amount of cautery afterward when needed. Speak with your urologist about whether this treatment is appropriate for you.

At Springdale Medical Center, surgeons use robotic technology for procedures including:

  • Kidney cyst removal
  • Cystectomy (bladder surgery)
  • Partial and total nephrectomy (kidney removal)
  • Prostatectomy
  • Pyeloplasty (reconstruction of the renal pelvis)
  • Sacrocolpopexy (pelvic organ prolapse repair)
  • Ureteral implantation

Surgeons at Willow Creek Medical Center use robotic-assisted surgery to treat urologic conditions. Ask your urologist which procedures and treatment options are appropriate for your condition.
